Being in an especially Fine Folksy mood lately, we’ve been watching a whole lot of The Andy Griffith Show. Even though we didn’t grow up in the heartland, the show has always given us that warmy wholesomey hometowney kind of feel that it’s hard to resist being charmed by. Didn’t realize though until a few minutes ago that this hometowney feel was a whole lot more rightfully placed than we knew. Turns out, not more than a few blocks from Fine Folks Headquarters (our apartment) in Culver City, there once stood a studio called 40 Acres. This 29 acre (whoops) studio backlot started being used in the 20’s by Cecil B. DeMille and changing ownership quite a few times (Desilu, RKO, Paramount…) until its closing in 1976 was not only home to the entire town of Mayberry but also the set of winners like Gone With The Wind, King Kong, Bonanza, Star Trek, Batman, and a massive array of other shows and movies that needed usually rural or old-timey outdoor full-scale sets. There’s something incredibly enchanting about this. The idea of this long gone faux-rural town tucked away down the street from us makes the magic of Mayberry seem even more real, even though it solidifies it as fantasy.
